Land-Rover Series II 88"

Land-Rover Series IIThis is the first post in a series to give some details of previous and current model builds.

This was my first scale 4×4 build, it started out as a Kamtec Land rover shell. Kamtec describe this as a series 1, but it is more like a hybrid mix of series 3 and 90. The original intention when starting it was to just paint it, put it on a chassis and bash it around.

So after sitting around in the garage for about 4 or 5 years work started on it in summer 2007, but as it progressed the more I looked at details the more I thought about how they could be improved. Eventually deciding that what I really wanted was a replica of my full size 1958 series 2 88″

Hopefully the following pictorial summary will inspire some of you to take on similar projects.

wheel arch extensions

The shell comes with 90/110 style wheel arch extensions so these were cut off and the holes filled with styrene off cuts. Wheel arches the right shape were cut out later.

The lights moulded in the wings had to be smoothed off as a SII has it’s headlights in the grill panel.

Sorting out the windscreen area

The windscreen moulding on the shell is too deep so a piece of styrene was fitted to form the vent panel and the outline of the vents put in with a Dremel.

Rear cappings and crossmember

Styrene was cut to replicate the shape of the galvanised cappings that fir around the top and corners of the rear load bed. Also a piece was added in the shape of teh Land-Rover rear crossmember.

Support for the ‘canvas’

The original hardtop roof was cut out to act as a frame to support the canvas roof. Curved ribs were added on top of it to give the roof a more curved appearance.

Some paint

The shell was sprayed with marine blue cellulose automotive paint to match the full size version. This picture also shows the cut outs in the front grill panel.

The chassis

It is mounted on a modified Tamiya TL-01 chassis with an Integy 65T lathe motor, the front shock mounting is also modified in a similar way to this.
